  1. FIRST BOMBING RAID ON BERLIN
  2.  
  3. On March 6, 1944, the Eighth Air Force
  4. successfully launched its first large-
  5. scale raid on the Reich's capital.  
  6. Berlin had been the objective on several 
  7. occasions before, but adverse weather 
  8. caused each of these previous attempts 
  9. to be scrubbed.  730 heavy bombers 
  10. assembled in the skies over East Anglia 
  11. and proceeded east.  The bombers were 
  12. escorted by 796 fighters in anticipation 
  13. of heavy German fighter defenses.

  15. The primary targets for this day's 
  16. mission were aircraft factories, engine 
  17. factories, armament industries, and the 
  18. Erkner bearing plant in Berlin.  As 
  19. expected, intense fighter opposition was 
  20. encountered from the area over Dummer 
  21. Lake all the way to Berlin.  Dense flak 
  22. defenses were also present on all sides 
  23. of the city as the bombers neared their 
  24. various targets.

  28. You are part of a formation of six B-17s
  29. bound for Berlin.  Your target is the 
  30. Berlin ball bearing plant.  In order to
  31. skirt the flak batteries around Berlin, 
  32. you are flying a pattern that takes you
  33. south of the city.  Watch your flight
  34. leader to know when to turn north for 
  35. your approach to the target.  Although
  36. your group has P-51 fighter escorts, 
  37. aggressive enemy fighter resistance is
  38. expected.
